At Mangiarelli Rehabilitation, we provide a comprehensive industrial rehabilitation program for injured workers to support their recovery and return to full functional capacity and strength. We work together with the injured worker’s physician, case manager, and all those involved in their care and recovery to minimize limitations and decrease time away from work. A key aspect of our industrial rehabilitation program is the functional capacity test, which involves a one-on-one evaluation by our industrial rehabilitation physical therapist.

The functional capacity test (FCE) is a standardized, objective testing protocol that is used to evaluate a worker’s work-related functional abilities and limitations throughout their course of treatment. The FCE is performed at the start of physical therapy to establish a baseline of the worker’s functional level, evaluating the worker’s functional limitations, endurance, strength, range of motion, and tolerance for work-related tasks. It is completed in our clinic’s new specialty industrial rehabilitation testing space. Based on this evaluation, the physical therapist develops a customized treatment plan for the worker’s recovery based on their work-related needs.

As treatment progresses, the FCE is used as an ongoing evaluation of the worker’s progress from injury through recovery. The therapist helps the worker develop, maintain, and restore daily function and employment-related movements such that the worker regains their prior functioning level. The FCE is a reliable, legally defensible test which our clinic hand-delivers to the attorney.

The FCE includes:

  • Intake screening session

  • A musculoskeletal screen

  • Multiple-validity test

  • Non-material and material handling tolerance

  • Endurance testing

  • A final results comparison to job demands for appropriate job placement upon return to work

Physical therapy treatment for injured workers includes:

  • Modalities of ice and heat to reduce swelling, stiffness, and pain

  • Aquatic therapy in our warm water therapy pool

  • A specialized exercise program to replicate and simulate specific work-related tasks, increase strength training, and address body mechanics, ergonomics, and endurance

  • A customized work conditioning program to prepare for the demands of the workweek and allow for a safe return to work

  • Use of the clinic’s BTE PrimusRS testing equipment for objective evaluation and data-driven physical therapy program

At Mangiarelli Rehabilitation, we understand that a work injury can be an unexpected change in your life and create a sense of uncertainty about your next steps. We are here to navigate this uncertain time with you, restore you to strength and functionality, and help you safely return to work.
